Clara Elizabeth and
Charles Goodall Lee

Son of Methodist local preacher Lee Tong Hay, Dr. Charles Goodall Lee (far left in photo) was the first American-born Chinese licensed as a dentist in the state of California. He set up his dental practice in Oakland in the early 1900s, and became a lay leader in our church. He was an active participant in civil affairs, founding Oakland's Chinese American Citizens Alliance in 1912.  Charles married Clara Elizabeth (Yee Miew) Chan (standing next to Charles in photo). Clara was born to Rev. Chan Hon Fan and Ow Muck Gay (Elizabeth).  She was the first Chinese American woman to vote, and was a founder of the Chinese Women's Jeloab (self reliance) Association. The Lees exemplified the Chinese Methodist tradition of community involvement and social justice.
